Hello, World!

So you're here and probably wondering why.  Well, I can't really answer that, perhaps you were just THAT bored, but I can tell you a little bit about myself and the purpose of this blog.

In August of this year, I weighed 304.6 pounds.  At 6'1", that put me solidly into the obese category.  My company hosted a Biggest Loser contest at work and I decided to take part.  At first, I was walking and using the elliptical trainer at the gym.  A few weeks in, I decided to try my hand at running, since I had done it back in my fresman year at college.  My first run was not pretty.  At all.  I managed to make it about 1/2 a block before I was a wheezing, coughing, puking mess.  So I kept at it, following the C25K plan loosely, just trying to extend the amount of time running between walk breaks.  I eventually got to the point where I could run for 30 minutes without walking and decided to enter my first 5K.  During this time, my company's Biggest Loser contest came to an end and I was down to 271.8 pounds, a 10.77% weight loss and good enough for 2nd place in the contest.

I ran in my first 5K, the Depot Dash in Thomson, GA on Saturday, December 6th.  I finished in 36:32, well below my goal of a sub-40.  Based on how I did, I decided to get ready to run in the Cooper River Bridge Run in April 2009.  I'm now in training for that, with an intermediate goal race of the Pinch Gut Puffer 7.5K on January 10th.  This blog will be used to tell my story as I run.  Thanks for stopping by and don't forget to keep coming back for more updates!

  2. Saw your Tweet posted by Disneyrunner. Congratulations on the weight loss - very impressive - it's amazing what this sport can do! I posted a story of my own and links to others here to try to inspire as many people as possible: http://www.runblogger.com/2009/10/running-for-weight-loss-stories-of.html. I'd love to add your link as well if you're willing - do you have a post with the before/after photos?
